About

Undefeated bantamweight prospect with serious power and wrestling, but a chronic weight-cutting problem that undermines his credibility.

Rafael Estevam arrived in the UFC in 2022 as an undefeated prospect off Dana White's Contender Series, carrying high expectations and a wrestling-heavy, grind-it-out fighting style. For his first four UFC contests, he remained perfect, notching unanimous decision victories over quality opposition including former LFA flyweight champion Charles Johnson. His wins came through clinch control, pressure, and attrition rather than flashy striking or finishes, and he proved capable of outpointing durable opponents over three rounds. That undefeated record, however, came with an asterisk that grew larger with each fight: Estevam could not make weight. He missed the 126lb flyweight limit in three of his first four UFC bouts, including a shocking 4-pound overage at bantamweight in August 2025, a weight class to which he had moved specifically to eliminate cutting stress. The repeated failures drew scathing criticism from fans and rival fighters, who argued he was gaining an unfair advantage and demonstrating a lack of professionalism and discipline.

In April 2026, Estevam's undefeated streak and the weight-cutting saga collided. He faced Ethyn Ewing at UFC Fight Night 272 after missing weight yet again, and Ewing, speaking after the fight, made clear he believed Estevam had been broken before they even touched gloves. The young prospect looked depleted in the cage and was finished by KO in the third round, recording his first professional loss. That defeat did not come as a shock to observers; it felt almost inevitable, the culmination of a fighter's inability or unwillingness to respect the basics of his sport. Estevam's story remains one of raw talent undermined by a critical character flaw, and his future in the UFC now hinges on whether he can finally demonstrate the discipline his opponents and the fanbase have long demanded.

Why some fans hate Estevam

Chronic weight misses (three in four UFC fights, including 4lb miss at bantamweight after moving up to avoid the problem) are seen as cheating and disrespectful to opponents who make weight fairly. Fans call for UFC punishment and even release. His first loss came amid widespread commentary that he entered the Ewing fight already broken mentally and physically from a failed weight cut, suggesting the fight was compromised from the start.
