Journey Newson is a bantamweight from Oregon who spent most of his fighting career chasing UFC validation. Born in 1989 and raised in Merced, California, Newson turned to martial arts early on (Tae Kwon Do at twelve, jiu-jitsu at twenty) and went pro in 2015, racking up a 9-1 record across regional West Coast promotions before earning his UFC debut as a late replacement against Ricardo Ramos in June 2019. That debut ended in a decision loss, setting a pattern of inconsistency that would follow him throughout his time in the organization. Newson showed flashes of elite-level potential with a spectacular first-round knockout of Domingo Pilarte at UFC 247 in February 2020, but that win was overturned to a no contest after he tested positive for marijuana in post-fight screening. A brutal head-kick knockout by Randy Costa in September 2020 further derailed his momentum, leaving his UFC career in jeopardy.
After regrouping, Newson proved he could still compete at UFC level by earning a clean unanimous decision over Fernie Garcia at UFC 274 in May 2022, demonstrating his fundamental striking and decisiveness across three rounds. However, consecutive losses to Sergey Morozov in December 2022 and Marcus McGhee (via submission) in April 2023 sealed his fate; he was released from the UFC roster in June 2023. Across his ten victories, Newson finished opponents three times by knockout and three times by submission (triangle, guillotine, rear-naked choke), showcasing his technical depth as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. His 10-5-0 record reflects a gatekeeper role at UFC bantamweight, a fighter whose wins often came against lesser competition and whose losses mounted against the division's mid-tier talent.
Why fans love Newson
Documented resilience overcoming childhood foster care, genuine passion for the sport (worked as truck driver before fighting), and willingness to step in as late replacement. His technical grappling background and finishing ability drew respectful attention.
