Nik Lentz is a journeyman veteran of the UFC's lightweight and featherweight divisions who carved out a respectable career as a technical grappler and submission specialist. A former state champion wrestler from Minnesota and D1 wrestler at the University of Minnesota, Lentz turned pro in 2005 and eventually signed with the UFC in 2009 as an underdog replacement fighter. Over his UFC tenure, he compiled 30 wins against 12 losses and 2 draws, establishing himself as a reliable mid-tier competitor willing to accept short-notice bouts.
Lentz's fighting style blends wrestling fundamentals with submission-oriented grappling. He lands strikes from distance and the clinch but is most dangerous when controlling opponents on the mat, with a particular expertise in the guillotine choke and rear naked choke. His ability to mount comebacks, especially in third rounds when trailing, made several of his UFC appearances memorable enough to earn him three Fight of the Night bonuses. Among his best victories were a split-decision upset over Tyson Griffin at UFC 123, a stunning head-kick TKO finish of Gray Maynard at UFC 229, and a submission victory over Will Brooks that earned him a Performance of the Night bonus.
Lentz became a popular figure for his willingness to step in on short notice, replacing injured fighters on multiple occasions. However, his later career saw him face increasingly elite competition, with losses mounting to rising contenders like Islam Makhachev, David Teymur, and eventual title challenger Charles Oliveira. At 38 years old and following a split-decision loss to Movsar Evloev at UFC 257 in January 2021, Lentz announced his retirement. He revealed that he had suffered significant vision loss requiring surgery after his fight with Arnold Allen, a medical setback that left him unable to continue competing. Lentz remains a respected veteran known for his technical grappling, warrior mentality, and memorable battles rather than championship accolades.
