Dan Severn, nicknamed The Beast, is one of mixed martial arts' founding fathers and a two-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion who competed at the highest levels of both professional wrestling and combat sports simultaneously. Born in 1958 in Michigan, Severn came to the UFC in 1994 as a decorated amateur wrestler and Olympic trials finalist with credentials in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, Judo, and Sambo. His arrival at UFC 4 marked a turning point: here was the first truly elite grappler from mainstream American wrestling to step into the Octagon, and though he fell to Royce Gracie in the tournament finals, he had announced himself as a force.

Severn's breakthrough came at UFC 5 in 1995, where he won the tournament and then went on to claim the Ultimate Ultimate 1995 championship later that year, defeating Paul Varelans, David Tank Abbott, and Oleg Taktarov on the same night. This triple championship run made him the first UFC Triple Crown champion in history and established his legacy as a game-changer. He captured his third title by defeating Ken Shamrock via split decision at UFC 9 for the UFC Superfight Championship, though that memorable bout was constrained by late-notice rule modifications that drastically limited striking to the head. Severn's wrestling-based grappling style, emphasizing control, positioning, and submission craft, proved devastatingly effective in those early, less specialized days of the sport.

Though Severn's later UFC run was brief and saw losses to Mark Coleman and Pedro Rizzo around 1997-2000, his impact on the organization was already cemented. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame at UFC 52 in 2006. His career did not end there: Severn continued competing in MMA and other promotions including Pride, the International Vale Tudo Championship, WEC, and King of the Cage, accumulating a professional record of 101 wins, 19 losses, and 7 draws - making him one of the winningest fighters in combat sports history. Today, as an active veteran still competing into his later years, Severn remains a symbol of wrestling's revolutionary impact on modern MMA and a respected mentor to a generation of elite fighters.

Why fans love Severn

Severn earned respect as a true pioneer and world-class athlete who brought elite amateur wrestling into the UFC at a time when few understood its dominance. His Hall of Fame induction and Triple Crown achievement are unquestionable; he is revered as one of the architects of modern MMA.
