Bekzat Almakhan is a 28-year-old Kazakh bantamweight who represents a new generation of striking prospects emerging from Central Asia into the UFC. Born in the village of Akzhar and raised in Taraz, he steeped himself in karate and boxing from childhood before pivoting to professional MMA as an adult in Almaty. His amateur record included Asian and World championships in national martial arts, signaling a serious technical foundation. After building a large regional résumé (later audited and trimmed by Sherdog due to questionable record-keeping), Almakhan earned a UFC contract in early 2024.
His Octagon debut against top prospect Umar Nurmagomedov in March 2024 was instructive: he hurt Nurmagomedov multiple times on the feet in the opening round, proving his striking could stun elite competition, but was ultimately overwhelmed by superior wrestling and ground control over three rounds, losing by unanimous decision. Rather than define him, that loss became a stepping stone. In his second UFC outing at UFC 315 in May 2025, Almakhan delivered a statement: a brutal first-round knockout of Brad Katona, a veteran mid-level bantamweight who had never been stopped before, with a devastating punch just over a minute into the fight. The finish announced him as a genuine prospect with legitimate one-punch power.
Since that breakout moment, Almakhan has stumbled. Back-to-back unanimous decision losses to Aleksandre Topuria (November 2025) and Jean Matsumoto (June 2026) have interrupted his rise and left questions about his competitive level. He remains a fast, fluid striker who prefers range and volume, capable of wrestling when needed and equipped with solid ground-and-pound, but the recent losses suggest the UFC's elite bantamweights can neutralize his approach. At 28 and still only 3-1 in the Octagon, Almakhan sits at a crossroads: a follow-up win could restart his ascent, while another setback could relegate him to gatekeeper status. The Katona KO proved the upside is real; whether he can reclaim it remains the open question.
