Stevie Ray is a Scottish mixed martial artist whose career has been defined by reinvention and resilience. After amassing a solid 16-5 record in British regional promotions (Cage Warriors, BAMMA) where he won lightweight titles, Ray made his UFC debut in 2015 as a short-notice replacement and immediately impressed, earning a Performance of the Night bonus for a first-round TKO. His early UFC run showed promise, with comeback victories over Joe Lauzon and Ross Pearson, but he suffered setbacks against top-tier opposition: a brutal first-round knockout loss to Paul Felder in 2017 and another KO defeat to Leonardo Santos in 2019. Those losses, combined with recurring knee injuries, prompted Ray to retire in 2020.

That retirement proved temporary. In 2021, Ray returned to competition with the Professional Fighters League, and in doing so, he discovered a whole new dimension to his fighting arsenal. Rather than relying on his respectable striking volume (449 significant strikes landed in the UFC), Ray developed into a submission specialist with elite grappling technique, particularly a devastating modified body triangle submission he named the 'Scottish Twister.' The transformation was immediate and striking: in 2022, he defeated former UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis twice, including once in the PFL Semifinals, with both victories coming by submission. Ray reached the PFL Lightweight tournament finals in 2022, though he fell short of the championship.

Ray's appeal to fans lies in his humble grit and technical evolution. He is not a trash-talking showman but rather a craftsman who quietly rebuilt his game after early setbacks. His matches often carry an underdog energy: he enters exchanges willing to absorb strikes and traffic early, then uses his superior cardio and grappling IQ to shift momentum in the later rounds or on the ground. The Pettis victories, in particular, demonstrated that Ray remains capable of elite-level performances and can dismantle recognizable names when he is on his game. As an active fighter in the modern landscape, Ray remains a dangerous submission threat for any lightweight who sleeps on his ground game.

Why fans love Ray

His resilience and redemption arc, especially the return from retirement and submission breakthrough. Ray earned fan respect for coming back stronger after early UFC disappointments, and his respect for opponents (no trash talk documented) and willingness to evolve his skillset mid-career endear him to audiences who value grit over hype.

Why some fans hate Ray

A split-decision loss to Kajan Johnson and a controversial unanimous decision win vs. Jessin Ayari generated some skepticism about his judging karma. Also, some fans may view his UFC career as underwhelming relative to his potential, given the losses to Felder and Santos and the long stretches between wins.
