Gadzhimurad Antigulov

Gadzhimurad Antigulov is a 37-year-old Russian light heavyweight from Dagestan whose career has followed a common pattern: regional dominance followed by UFC struggles. Over nine years fighting in the Russian circuit, he became a two-time champion for Absolute Championship Berkut and compiled an 18-4 record before making his UFC debut in November 2016. His opening UFC fight against Marcos Rogério de Lima was a clinic in submission grappling, as he locked in a guillotine choke just 67 seconds into round one and earned a Performance of the Night bonus. He followed that with another first-round submission win against Joachim Christensen in May 2017, suggesting the light heavyweight division had a new grappling threat.

That promise unraveled quickly. Starting in July 2018, Antigulov hit a devastating losing streak marked by consecutive first-round finishes against Ion Cuțelaba, Michał Oleksiejczuk, Paul Craig, and Maxim Grishin. Between these losses, he also dealt with multiple injury-related pullouts from scheduled bouts, including canceled fights with Ed Herman, Aleksandar Rakić, Sam Alvey, and others. These injuries and early losses painted a picture of declining durability and a fighter whose body could not keep pace with elite competition.

As a fighter, Antigulov is a submission specialist with a wrestling pedigree. Seventy-five percent of his 20 career wins have come by submission, reflecting his grappling-first approach learned on the wrestling mats of Dagestan. He is patient on the ground, methodical in hunting the back, and skilled in executing chokes and joint locks. However, his striking defense is modest (40%), and his takedown accuracy suggests he relies on scrambles and clinch work rather than level-change explosiveness. By late 2020, after the loss to Grishin, the UFC released him. Since then, he has fought in regional promotions like UAE Warriors and ACA, winning some bouts but also suffering losses, a trajectory typical of aging grapplers trying to find their level outside the elite ranks.
