Abusupiyan Magomedov is a 35-year-old Russian fighter who grew up in Dagestan before his family relocated to Germany when he was 15. He trained in wrestling and martial arts from childhood, eventually branching into kickboxing and mixed martial arts in his adopted homeland. After nearly a decade building his record in regional European promotions, Magomedov competed in the Professional Fighters League and signed with the UFC in 2021. His debut in September 2022 at UFC Paris was unforgettable: he finished Dustin Stoltzfus with a front kick and follow-up punches in just 19 seconds, earning Performance of the Night honors and immediate attention from matchmakers.
The rapid push that followed proved premature. Magomedov was placed into a UFC main event against Sean Strickland, who knocked him out in the second round en route to an Israel Adesanya title shot. A unanimous decision loss to rising contender Caio Borralho followed, leaving Magomedov with a 0-2 record in the promotion despite his explosive debut. However, he has since steadied himself with three consecutive wins over Warlley Alves, Brunno Ferreira (via arm-triangle submission), and Michel Pereira, climbing back into the middleweight rankings.
As a fighter, Magomedov is an aggressive finisher who relies on heavy hands and a credible submission game built around chokes. He has recorded 14 knockout wins and 7 submission victories across his professional career, with 15 first-round finishes overall. His striking is sharp at distance, and opponents have noted he can be hurt by powerful hitters while also losing steam after the second round. At this stage of his career, Magomedov represents the veteran operator: a disciplined, well-rounded competitor who earned his seat at the UFC table through years of grinding in smaller promotions rather than a fast-track prospect system. His appeal lies in his finish rate and his comeback narrative after early UFC setbacks.
Why fans love Magomedov
Magomedov comes across as a grinder with genuine martial arts passion. He started training as a kid in Dagestan, moved to Germany for his mother's medical treatment, and has dedicated his life to fighting without fanfare. His finish rate (50% knockouts, 25% submissions, 25% decisions) appeals to fans who prefer action. The 19-second debut remains one of the most electrifying UFC entries in recent memory, and his willingness to fight ranked opponents after a loss shows courage.
