Charles Byrd

Charles Dewayne Byrd Jr., nicknamed 'Kid Dynamite,' is a retired middleweight mixed martial artist from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, who competed professionally from 2009 to 2020. After building a 7-4 record across regional promotions including Legacy Fighting Championship, Byrd earned consecutive wins on Dana White's Contender Series in July and August 2017, securing his UFC contract on his second attempt. He made his Octagon debut in March 2018 against John Phillips at UFC Fight Night: Werdum vs. Volkov, winning via rear-naked choke submission in the first round and announcing himself as a dangerous submission artist at the elite level.

Byrd's tenure in the UFC, however, proved challenging against top-tier competition. He compiled a 1-4 record in his five UFC appearances, facing rising middleweight prospects and established fighters. Losses to Edmen Shahbazyan (TKO, R1, UFC 235), Darren Stewart (TKO, R2, UFC 228), and Maki Pitolo (TKO, R2, UFC 250) highlighted vulnerabilities in his striking defense and clinch work. After a 15-month layoff following the Stewart loss, Byrd returned at UFC 250 in June 2020 but was stopped by Pitolo, leading him to announce his retirement immediately after the bout.

As a fighter, Byrd leaned heavily on submission skills and ground control, accumulating five submission victories across his pro career and demonstrating solid wrestling fundamentals. However, his takedown success rate in the UFC (40% defense) and striking accuracy (56% significant strike defense) lagged behind the elite middleweight standard, making him vulnerable to aggressive strikers who could pressure him early. His run represents the reality of many regional grinders: earning a shot through smaller-promotion success does not always translate to sustained UFC competition.
