Alexander Otsuka, the ring name of Takashi Otsuka, is a Japanese professional wrestler-turned-MMA fighter whose career embodies the spirit of shoot-style wrestling meeting elite mixed martial arts. Born in 1971, Otsuka built a decorated career in Battlarts and other Japanese pro wrestling promotions before transitioning to MMA in 1995. His debut in PRIDE Fighting Championships came in 1998, where he faced Vale Tudo legend Marco Ruas at PRIDE 4. Against all expectations, Otsuka defeated Ruas with ground and pound, earning one of the biggest upset victories in Japanese MMA history and a Tokyo Sports magazine award for his performance. The win established him as a serious fighter despite his wrestling-first background.

Otsuka's signature trait was not technical superiority or knockout power, but extraordinary toughness and a wrestling-based system of takedowns, positional control, and submission defense. Over his PRIDE career, he faced an elite roster of all-time greats: Renzo Gracie (whom he impressed so much the legendary Brazilian praised him as "a very tough opponent"), Ken Shamrock, Igor Vovchanchyn, Wanderlei Silva, and Anderson Silva. Despite finishing his career with a 5-13 record, Otsuka earned consistent fan respect for his refusal to be finished and his willingness to accept fights against far superior strikers. His bout with Renzo Gracie became a classic not because he won, but because he competed so fiercely and stayed in the fight through superior grappling instincts and heart. Even against Anderson Silva, Otsuka controlled much of the fight through positional wrestling, losing only on PRIDE's submission-heavy judging criteria.

Otsuka's MMA legacy rests not on a winning record but on proving that a skilled wrestler with unshakeable toughness could compete with the elite, even as a stylistic underdog. He became a cult figure in Japanese MMA circles, a bridge between the pro wrestling world and elite combat sports, celebrated for his grit and technical wrestling fundamentals in an era when most Japanese wrestlers faded against international competition.

Why fans love Otsuka

His willingness to take fights against all-time greats despite a losing record, his refusal to be finished despite absorbing punishment, and his grit in performances like the Renzo Gracie fight (where Gracie himself praised him as 'a very tough opponent') made him a fan favorite. His upset over Marco Ruas cemented his legend as a true underdog.

Why some fans hate Otsuka

At PRIDE 20 against Sanae Kikuta, Otsuka threw multiple low blows and disrespected his opponent throughout the fight, drawing criticism for unsportsmanlike conduct in a heated matchup.
