Mirko Cro Cop is a Croatian mixed martial artist and kickboxer widely considered one of the greatest heavyweight strikers in combat sports history. Born Mirko Filipović in 1974, he earned his nickname 'Cro Cop' (short for Croatian Cop) from his service in the Lučko Anti-Terrorist Unit, Croatia's elite police special forces. After establishing himself as a world-class kickboxer and amateur boxer throughout the 1990s, he transitioned to MMA in 2001 and quickly rose to prominence in Pride Fighting Championships, where he became famous for his devastating striking and signature left high roundhouse kick, famously described as 'right leg, hospital; left leg, cemetery.'
Cro Cop's Pride career was marked by a string of spectacular first-round knockouts and the 2006 Open-Weight Grand Prix Championship. He defeated multiple former UFC heavyweight champions including Josh Barnett, Mark Coleman, and Kevin Randleman, establishing himself as one of the division's most feared strikers. His technical boxing, precise timing, and finishing power made him must-see television throughout his prime. Though he lost fights to elite heavyweights like Fedor Emelianenko and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, he proved his standing as a legitimate title contender and generational talent.
After Pride's closure, Cro Cop continued fighting at the highest level across the UFC, K-1 (where he won the 2014 World Grand Prix Final in Zagreb), Rizin, and Bellator. Remarkably, he captured the 2016 Rizin Openweight Grand Prix Championship at age 41, becoming only the second fighter to win world championships in both kickboxing and MMA. His final run saw him avenging UFC losses to Gabriel Gonzaga and Roy Nelson, closing out his career on a 10-fight win streak. He holds records for 21 first-round finishes and 8 victories via kicks in Zuffa-promoted events, cementing his legacy as one of combat sports' most technically brilliant heavyweight strikers. He retired in March 2019 following health concerns and a stroke, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire fighters worldwide.
