Magomed Mustafaev is a Russian lightweight known for aggressive, finish-oriented striking and an impressive submission arsenal. Born in Dagestan and trained in Sochi, Mustafaev turned professional in 2011 and made his name winning the Sochi Star 2014 Welterweight Grand Prix before signing with the UFC in late 2014. After transitioning to lightweight, he made an immediate impact with a pair of devastating first-round finishes: a TKO against Joe Proctor at UFC 194 in December 2015 highlighted by a liver kick, and subsequent early stoppage wins that established him as one of the promotion's most exciting young strikers. A submission loss to rising prospect Kevin Lee in November 2016, coupled with an arm injury that forced him into a multi-year layoff, derailed his momentum.
Mustafaev's return to competition in April 2019 proved spectacular. Facing promotional newcomer Rafael Fiziev, he delivered a signature first-round technical knockout via spinning back kick and punches that earned him Performance of the Night honors and reminded observers of his explosive potential. However, a split-decision loss to Brad Riddell in February 2020 proved costly, and Mustafaev has not competed since. His fighting style emphasizes high-volume striking from the standing position, clinch work, and dangerous submission skills (armbar, triangle, heel hook) with a finish rate of 100% across his wins. With 10 knockouts and 4 submissions in his 14 UFC victories, he is a pure finisher who has never won by decision. As of 2024, Mustafaev has been released from the UFC and remains inactive, making him a relic of the mid-to-late 2010s lightweight scene.
Why fans love Mustafaev
Devastating striking, submission versatility, and hunger for early finishes. His spinning back kick KO over Fiziev showcased flash and technique that made him exciting to watch during his active run.
