Blagoy Ivanov is a 37-year-old Bulgarian heavyweight with roots in elite amateur combat sports. Before MMA, he was a judo national team member and a world-class Sambo competitor, notably defeating Fedor Emelianenko in the semifinals of the 2008 World Combat Sambo Championships. His transition to mixed martial arts proved successful at the regional level and in Bellator, where he won and defended the WSOF Heavyweight championship three times between 2015 and 2017. When he signed with the UFC in 2018, he was already in his early thirties, but his technical skill and experience allowed him to compete immediately at a high level. His UFC debut against former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos was competitive, and he went on to defeat quality opponents including Ben Rothwell and Tai Tuivasa. However, losses to Derrick Lewis, Augusto Sakai, and Marcin Tybura prevented him from ascending further into title contention. Ivanov fights as a precision striker, using sharp footwork and hand speed drawn from his Sambo background to land clean shots at range and defend takedowns effectively. His style is cerebral rather than explosive; he accumulates points through accurate striking rather than knockout power, winning most of his bouts by decision. As a veteran in a division dominated by younger athletes, Ivanov has shown durability and competitive spirit, though his recent record and a 2024 USADA suspension for anabolic steroids have marked the decline of his active career. He remains a respected figure in heavyweight MMA for his longevity and technical approach, a throwback to Eastern European combat sports tradition.
Why fans love Ivanov
Ivanov represents the old-school European combat sports tradition, a Sambo world champion who proved his toughness by surviving a 2012 stabbing and returning to the cage. His technical, methodical fighting style and sustained competitiveness against top heavyweights earned respect in the MMA community.
