Hamdy Abdelwahab is a 32-year-old Egyptian heavyweight who arrived at the UFC with an impressive pedigree as an Olympic wrestler and multiple-time African championship medalist. After competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics and earning a bronze medal at the 2014 World Championships, he transitioned to professional MMA in 2021 and built a strong early record of 5 knockout victories, with 4 coming in the first round. That success earned him a call to the UFC in July 2022, making him the first Egyptian fighter in company history. However, his octagon tenure has been marked by setbacks and inconsistency. His debut ended in a no-contest after he won a decision over Don'tale Mayes but subsequently failed a post-fight drug test. A split decision win over Jamal Pogues in February 2025 was followed by his first official UFC loss to Mohammed Usman via unanimous decision in June 2025, a bout in which Abdelwahab acknowledged ring rust and disorientation. He returned in October 2025 to face Chris Barnett at UFC 321, securing a unanimous decision victory, but the performance drew heavy criticism from fans and observers for its control-heavy, grinding approach and failure to finish.
Abdelwahab's fighting style is rooted in his wrestling foundation. He lands significant strikes from standing, clinch, and ground positions, with perfect takedown defense and a willingness to control opponents through positioning. Yet in recent UFC outings, that approach has yielded narrow, uninspiring victories that frustrated both the fanbase and the promotion. Days after the Barnett win, the UFC declined to renew his contract. Adding to the narrative, Abdelwahab revealed that he had quit his full-time job just before the fight to focus entirely on training, a decision that underscores the financial and career risk faced by mid-tier UFC fighters. The end of his stint in the promotion represents a cautionary tale: elite amateur credentials and knockout power in the early pro ranks do not guarantee success when crossing into elite mixed martial arts competition.
Why some fans hate Abdelwahab
Criticized for control-heavy, grinding fighting style lacking entertainment value; failed post-fight drug test on UFC debut; recent performance against Barnett drew widespread fan backlash for lack of finishing instinct despite winning.
