Tagir Ulanbekov is a 34-year-old Dagestani flyweight who has spent the last four years establishing himself in the UFC's 125-pound division. Born in Dagestan and raised in Makhachkala, he trained at Eagles MMA under the tutelage of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the late father of Khabib and mentor to current welterweight champion Islam Makhachev. Before his UFC debut in 2020, Ulanbekov won titles in Fight Night Global and Gorilla FC, developing a reputation as a relentless submission artist and grappler. His record of 17-3-0 reflects a fighter who relies on wrestling, positional control, and leg-lock and choke finishes rather than striking power: seven of his victories have come by submission, and the majority of his wins are hard-fought decisions where he simply outworks his opponent over three rounds.

In the UFC, Ulanbekov climbed the rankings steadily through 2023, notching decision victories over experienced foes and showcasing his submission prowess, most notably with a face-crank finish of Cody Durden in December 2023. His 2025 campaign saw him secure unanimous decisions over Clayton Carpenter and Azat Maksum, putting him in range of top-five opposition. However, his November 2025 bout against elite Japanese challenger Kyoji Horiguchi revealed a stark vulnerability: Ulanbekov suffered a catastrophic weight cut that left him severely depleted, and he was submitted via rear-naked choke in the third round. Cornerman Islam Makhachev later disclosed that Ulanbekov performed at roughly 50% capacity due to the drain of cutting from a much higher walk-around weight, raising questions about whether the flyweight limit remains sustainable for the 34-year-old.

Ulanbekov's appeal lies in his unadorned, high-wrestling approach and his pedigree from the Eagle's nest of Dagestan. Fans who admire technical grappling and submission finishes will find his resume compelling, and his ties to the Nurmagomedov family lend him legitimacy within the sport's elite circles. His recent stumble against Horiguchi, however, coupled with the weight-cut concerns aired by his own team, suggest that his next move and weight-class future will define the next chapter of his career.

Why fans love Ulanbekov

Unassuming, hardworking product of the Dagestani wrestling tradition; operates out of the same gym as Khabib and Islam Makhachev, lending him credibility and a strong peer group. Finishes fights with slick submission technique and rarely has a dull outing. Humble, focused demeanor in interviews.
