Mohammad Yahya is a 31-year-old featherweight striker from London now based in the UAE, and he holds the distinction of being the first Emirati fighter in UFC history. His path to the octagon began at age 14 after watching The Ultimate Fighter, leading him to develop a black belt in kickboxing and credentials in regional BJJ and kickboxing tournaments before turning pro in 2014. He finally reached the UFC in October 2023 with a solid debut decision win over Trevor Peek, suggesting he belonged at the sport's highest level.

Yahya is a knockout artist with heavy hands and relentless forward pressure. Seven of his twelve career wins have come via knockout or TKO, and he lands 3.5 significant strikes per minute while maintaining a 43% defense rate. His striking is largely confined to distance and clinch work; he is not a grappler, having landed just one takedown in his UFC tenure. This style has generated four first-round finishes and a potent record, but it has also left him exposed to sharper strikers who can break his rhythm or overwhelm his defense.

The last two fights illustrate that vulnerability starkly. In August 2024, Kauê Fernandes stopped him in the first round. Worse came in July 2025 against Steven Nguyen, when Yahya was dropped eight times (a UFC record), six of them officially counted, before the bout was stopped between rounds due to a severe eye hematoma. Thankfully, CT scans showed no facial fractures, but the loss raised questions about whether Yahya can succeed at featherweight elite level without refining his defense or developing a grappling exit.

What keeps fans invested is Yahya's historic significance and his genuine humility. He is the first Emirati in UFC history and has spoken openly of his hope to inspire the next generation in the UAE. He is a respectful, laid-back person who described himself as in awe of all opponents who step into the cage. His knockout power and aggressive style remain compelling, and at 12-6, he is not yet written off. Whether he can bounce back and fulfill his potential as a regional champion turned UFC striker will be the arc to watch.

Why fans love Yahya

Yahya is explicitly proud of being the first Emirati in UFC and hopes to inspire the next generation in the UAE. He describes himself as 'laid-back' and 'very proud' to represent his country and culture. Fans respect his humility (he told Nguyen post-fight that he respects all opponents as warriors), his diverse striking pedigree (black belt kickboxing, regional tournament wins), and his resilience stepping into the octagon despite recent setbacks.
