Yaroslav Amosov is a 32-year-old Ukrainian welterweight who arrived at the UFC in late 2025 as one of the most accomplished submission artists in modern MMA. Built on a foundation of Combat Sambo excellence (four-time world champion), Amosov compiled a stunning 27-0 record across Tech-Krep FC and Bellator, culminating in a Bellator Welterweight Championship victory over Douglas Lima in 2021. In November 2023, he lost his first-ever MMA fight to Jason Jackson in a shocking third-round knockout while defending his title, but his career trajectory was already shaped by events far larger than the octagon. During Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Amosov left the sport, evacuated his family, and joined the fight for his country's survival, serving in the military for more than a year.
Returning to MMA in 2025, Amosov signed with the UFC and made his debut against Neil Magny in December, finishing him via anaconda choke in the first round. He followed that victory with another first-round submission of Joel Alvarez in May 2026, earning a $100,000 Performance of the Night bonus. Sitting at #10 in the welterweight rankings with a 2-0 UFC record, Amosov fights with a submission-first approach rooted in his sambo background. He lands 43 percent of his wins by submission, with particular mastery of anaconda chokes and rear-naked chokes, and prefers to impose his wrestling and clinch control rather than engage in protracted striking exchanges.
What sets Amosov apart is not just his technical dominance but his unshakeable perspective. In interviews, he has been articulate about the difference between combat sport and actual warfare, refusing to allow casual references to fighting to diminish the gravity of what he and his country endured. He speaks of his desire to provide hope and positive emotion to Ukraine and its soldiers, grounding his MMA career in a larger purpose. With a former title, elite submission credentials, and a clear path to UFC gold, Amosov represents a fighter who has lived far beyond the cage and now competes with the calm focus of someone who has already faced real stakes.
Why fans love Amosov
Amosov carries a rare authenticity: a dominant champion who stepped away at his peak to serve in Ukraine's military, returned to fight, and now competes with quiet confidence backed by elite technical skills. His refusal to trivialize warfare and his expressed desire to provide hope to his country resonate deeply. Fans respect fighters who deliver finishes and substance beyond the cage.
