Ryan Benoit is a San Diego-based flyweight who turned pro in 2009 and joined the UFC in late 2013 with the backing of a Fight of the Night bonus in his debut, despite a loss to Josh Sampo. Standing 5'5" with 68.5 inches of reach, Benoit has built a reputation as an explosive striker with eight UFC wins by knockout and five first-round finishes, leaning heavily on his right hand and a willingness to finish opponents on the ground. His signature moment came at UFC 185 in March 2015, when he dropped Sergio Pettis with a left hook and finished him via ground and pound, earning UFC.com's #3 Upset of the Year before the moment was tarnished by a controversial post-fight kick for which he immediately apologized.

Despite flashes of brilliance, Benoit's UFC career has been defined by inconsistency and repeated obstacles. He has lost many close fights by split or unanimous decision, leaving fans and analysts debating outcomes. More damaging to his legacy are the persistent weight-cut issues: he came in 3 pounds overweight against Ashkan Mokhtarian in 2017 (forfeiting 20% of his purse at a catchweight) and again against Zarrukh Adashev in 2021, which led to a Nevada Athletic Commission cancellation on health grounds. His trajectory was further derailed by a 2018-2020 suspension related to long-term trace amounts of an anabolic steroid metabolite discovered in testing, coupled with multiple fight cancellations and withdrawals for undisclosed or injury-related reasons.

By 2020-2021, Benoit's fortunes had collapsed. He lost three straight fights in the octagon (split decision to Alatengheili in 2019, unanimous decision to Tim Elliott in 2020, and another unanimous decision to Adashev in 2021) before the UFC released him in August 2021. Once a prospect with genuine knockout power and highlight-reel finishes, Benoit's career arc serves as a cautionary tale of how weight-management failures, suspensions, and fight cancellations can derail even a talented striker. His 10-8 record masks a fighter who showed real promise early but never overcame the discipline and consistency issues that plague the lower echelons of the UFC roster.

Why some fans hate Benoit

Repeated weight misses (came in 3 pounds overweight at least twice in his UFC run) frustrated fans and drew forfeiture of purse; controversial post-fight kick to Sergio Pettis after referee separation, though Benoit apologized and faced no discipline; pattern of fight cancellations and withdrawals (pulled out of UFC 228, withdrew from UFC on ESPN: Eye vs. Calvillo).
