Greg Hardy is a former NFL Pro Bowl defensive end whose combat sports career has been marked by explosive striking power, early finishes, and recurring controversy. After starring for the Carolina Panthers - including a franchise-record 15-sack season in 2013 - Hardy's football career ended when he was placed on the NFL's exempt list during a domestic violence investigation. He transitioned to fighting in 2018, signing with the UFC in 2019 at age 30. Hardy immediately impressed with knockout power: his first two UFC bouts ended in devastating first-round finishes, and he finished with six knockouts across seven wins, five of them in the opening round. His 7-5 record masks an inconsistent tenure. While he earned a unanimous decision over Yorgan De Castro at UFC 249 in May 2020 and stopped Maurice Greene in the second round, he suffered losses to legitimate contenders Alexander Volkov and Tai Tuivasa, the latter a first-round KO at UFC 264 in 2021. A three-fight losing streak led the UFC to release him in 2022. Hardy's in-cage conduct drew scrutiny: his decision win over Ben Sosoli was overturned to a no-contest after he used an inhaler between rounds, and he was disqualified against Allen Crowder for an illegal knee. Since leaving the UFC, Hardy has competed in boxing and bare-knuckle boxing with mixed results. He returned to MMA in January 2026 but continues to generate headlines for the wrong reasons - most notably missing weight by 25 pounds for a heavyweight bout in May 2026, an egregious miss that highlighted ongoing weight management issues. Hardy remains a polarizing figure: casual fans respect the knockout power and the boldness of a late-career pivot from football to fighting, while critics view his tenure as emblematic of poor decision-making, weight discipline problems, and in-cage misconduct.

Why fans love Hardy

His striking power and finishing ability - six UFC wins by knockout, five in the first round - produce highlight-reel moments. His unlikely transition from NFL stardom to fighting later in his career showcases athletic ambition and hunger.

Why some fans hate Hardy

A documented pattern of controversial behavior in combat sports: a no-contest decision was overturned because he used an inhaler between rounds (UFC 2019); a disqualification loss for an illegal knee (UFC 2019); a high-profile weight miss of 25 pounds for a 2026 heavyweight bout; poor consistency and three-fight losing streak that got him released from the UFC; frequently criticized as an embarrassment to combat sports by journalists covering his career.
