Leonardo Santos is a Brazilian lightweight and one of the most credentialed jiu-jitsu artists to compete in the UFC, boasting seven world championships and a fourth-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Before turning to mixed martial arts in 2006, he was already a dominant force on the mat, and when he transitioned to the cage, he brought that submission expertise with him. In 2013, Santos won The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2, earning an immediate UFC contract and launching a career built on technical grappling and explosive finishing power. His record of 18-7-1 reflects the arc of a journeyman veteran: early momentum (including a first-round TKO of prospect Kevin Lee at UFC 194 in 2015 and consistent submission victories) gave way to a tougher run in recent years as the competition sharpened and his body aged.
Santos fights as a pure submission specialist, hunting the back relentlessly and setting traps from the clinch and ground to land his favorite techniques: arm triangles, rear-naked chokes, and arm locks. He has recorded 11 first-round finishes across his career, a testament to his willingness to engage early and his technical mastery of transitions. His striking, while serviceable, is not his primary weapon; instead, he uses pressure and clinch work to control pace and drag opponents into positions where his grappling becomes lethal.
In recent years, however, Santos has hit a wall. Losses to Grant Dawson (knockout, March 2021), Clay Guida (submission, December 2021), and Jared Gordon (unanimous decision, August 2022) have left him out of the ring and searching for his footing in a lightweight division packed with hungry, younger fighters. At 43 years old and currently inactive, Santos remains a respected veteran whose submission pedigree and first-round finishing rate earned him a loyal following among technique-minded fans, even if his path forward in the UFC is unclear.
