Rong Zhu is a 26-year-old Chinese lightweight whose journey to the UFC began with a chance television encounter with mixed martial arts. An ethnic Tibetan from Sichuan province, Rong started fighting professionally just days after his 16th birthday in 2016 and built a dominant regional resume on the Chinese circuit, capturing and defending the WLF Lightweight title three times. His UFC debut in April 2021 against Kazula Vargas marked the beginning of a rocky initial tenure punctuated by weight-miss penalties and losses, but the experience fueled his return. After being released, Rong entered the Road to UFC Season 2 tournament and proved his mettle, winning the entire lightweight bracket with a third-round submission of Shin Haraguchi in February 2024 to earn his way back to the main roster.

As a fighter, Rong is a pure striker with exceptional finishing instinct. He lands over six significant strikes per minute, with 86% of his output from standing range, combining boxing with effective ground-and-pound when he takes opponents down. His finishing credentials are elite: 17 knockout victories and six submissions, with 13 of his 28 pro wins coming in the first round. When he engages, opponents are in immediate danger. He also demonstrates solid takedown defense at 84%, though his average takedown rate remains low, suggesting he prefers to operate in the striking realm.

Rong's current trajectory is ascendant. After returning in September 2024, he suffered a setback to Chris Padilla via doctor stoppage from an accidental eye injury, but responded with back-to-back unanimous decision victories over Kody Steele (earning Fight of the Night honors) and Austin Hubbard in early 2025. Most recently, he delivered a dominant first-round knockout of Victor Martinez at Road to UFC Season 5 in May 2026, re-establishing himself as a prospect with elite finishing power. For casual fans, Rong offers an exciting combination of aggressive, high-pace striking and the genuine narrative of a rising fighter who had to claw his way back to the UFC stage after early disappointment.

Why fans love Zhu

Rong's aggressive finishing style produces highlight-reel moments - 59% of his wins come by knockout or TKO, with 13 first-round finishes. His back-story of discovering MMA by chance and rising through regional competition to tournament victory carries genuine underdog appeal. Recent return to the UFC after proving himself in Road to UFC adds a redemption narrative.

Why some fans hate Zhu

Rong missed weight twice in consecutive fights in 2021-2022 (158 lbs and 160 lbs respectively on separate occasions), forcing catchweight bouts and triggering significant purse forfeitures. These weight misses occurred early in his UFC tenure and raised durability questions about making the lightweight limit.
