Shayilan Nuerdanbieke is an ethnic Kazakh from the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in northern Xinjiang, China, who became fascinated with MMA after watching Conor McGregor fight on television. A trained wrestler with six years of grappling experience and a gold medal in the Xinjiang wrestling championship, he turned professional in 2016 and built a strong 37-9 record on the Chinese regional circuit before making his UFC debut in May 2021. Though he lost his first UFC fight to Joshua Culibao via unanimous decision, Nuerdanbieke has since won 10 of his last 13 bouts, establishing himself as one of the promotion's most explosive finishers at featherweight.

Nuerdanbieke fights with the aggression of a wrestler who learned to strike, favoring heavy hands and ground-and-pound to finish opponents as quickly as possible. His record reflects this style: 19 of his 39 professional wins have come by knockout, 10 by submission, and an astonishing 26 have ended in the first round. He has posted decisive unanimous-decision wins over Sean Soriano and TJ Brown and scored a highlight-reel first-round TKO over Darrick Minner, showcasing both his finishing power and cardio advantage over less-prepared opponents.

Recent fights against higher-ranked competition have exposed his limitations. In April 2023, he was stopped by Steve Garcia via body kick and ground-and-pound in the second round at UFC 287, and in June 2024, he lost to Melquizael Costa by face crank submission in the third round. These losses suggest that while Nuerdanbieke remains a dangerous finisher against middle-tier opponents, he is still climbing toward genuine title contention at 145 pounds. His story - a wrestler-turned-MMA fighter from remote Xinjiang inspired by McGregor to compete on the world's biggest stage - continues to resonate with fans who value his aggressive style and underdog narrative.

Why fans love Nuerdanbieke

The inspiring origin story: inspired by McGregor to leave wrestling in Xinjiang for professional MMA, now carrying his country's flag in the UFC. His aggressive, finishing-oriented style and willingness to engage in striking exchanges create exciting first-round moments. Representing an underrepresented region of the world in elite MMA.
