Shamil Abdurakhimov is a Russian heavyweight and former Abu Dhabi Fighting Championship titleholder who brought a strong grappling pedigree and technical striking arsenal to the UFC octagon. Born in Dagestan in 1981, he trained in Sanshou, boxing, and wrestling before establishing himself as one of Russia's top combat athletes. After winning the ADFC heavyweight belt in 2010, he signed with the UFC in 2015 at age 34, beginning a nine-year tenure that saw him post 8 wins against an increasingly elite roster.
Abdurakhimov's fighting style is that of a measured grappler. He lands most of his significant strikes from the standing and clinch positions, mixing hands with submission entries. His finishing arsenal includes Kimura locks, armbars, and chokes, making him dangerous in scrambles and on the mat. He compiled 9 knockouts and 4 submissions during his UFC run, often taking fights despite injuries and visa complications that forced multiple cancellations and reschedulings.
His best moments came in the 2017-2019 window, when he notched victories over Hall of Famer Andrei Arlovski via unanimous decision and Marcin Tybura via TKO. However, from 2019 onward, he faced a steady diet of elite heavyweights and struggled to keep pace. Losses to Curtis Blaydes, Chris Daukaus, Sergei Pavlovich, and finally Jailton Almeida in January 2023 closed out his UFC career. At 41 years old, Abdurakhimov was released from the roster following the Almeida defeat.
For fans, Abdurakhimov represented the ultimate grinder: a skilled, durable heavyweight who took every fight offered and never ducked competition, even when matched against rising contenders at his fighting range. He earned respect through consistent professionalism and technical competence rather than flashiness, making him a fixture of the UFC heavyweight division during a competitive era.
Why fans love Abdurakhimov
Abdurakhimov consistently took fights against elite heavyweight competition (Arlovski, Blaydes, Daukaus, Pavlovich, Almeida) and never complained about tough matchups. His well-rounded grappling, particularly his Kimura and submission game, earned technical respect. He carried himself with quiet professionalism.
