Kurt Holobaugh is a journeyman lightweight striker-turned-grappler who has spent nearly 15 years in professional MMA with mixed results at the sport's highest level. Born in 1986, he compiled an undefeated early record and found sustained success as a champion in regional promotions, notably winning titles in Titan Fighting Championships and the XFC. However, his first stint in the UFC (2013-2019) was marked by consecutive losses to quality opponents, leading to his release after a unanimous decision loss to Thiago Moises in 2019.

After rebuilding outside the promotion, Holobaugh earned a second UFC opportunity by winning Dana White's Contender Series in 2018. Though he suffered an early setback to Raoni Barcelos in 2018 (a devastating third-round knockout that earned Fight of the Night honors despite the loss), he persisted through the regional circuit. His career found new life in 2023 when he competed on season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter, where he delivered an impressive tournament run, including a late-round guillotine submission of Lee Hammond and a triangle choke finish of Austin Hubbard in the final at UFC 292.

Holobaugh's fighting style centers on submission grappling, particularly chokes. He excels on the mat and has repeatedly demonstrated the timing and patience to hunt back-take positions and secure finishes from dominant positions. However, he struggles with high-pace strikers and opponents who mix aggressive wrestling with hand speed, a vulnerability that has been exposed by elite competition at lightweight.

Despite his TUF 31 success, Holobaugh's post-tournament UFC career proved inconsistent. After losing split decisions to Trey Ogden and Alexander Hernandez in 2024-2025, he was quickly submitted by Jordan Leavitt in 99 seconds at UFC on ESPN 68 in May 2025, a loss that preceded his release from the promotion in November 2025. At 38 years old and with a 22-9 professional record, Holobaugh remains a credible veteran grappler, but his inability to sustain a winning streak at the UFC level suggests his days in the sport's premier organization have ended.

Why fans love Holobaugh

Holobaugh earned respect for his longevity, championship runs in regional promotions, and his ability to secure submission wins against quality opponents. His TUF 31 run, particularly his late-round guillotine over Lee Hammond and triangle finish of Austin Hubbard, demonstrated grit and tactical submission skills that appeal to technical MMA fans.
