Andre Muniz is a Brazilian middleweight who built a compact but memorable UFC career around submission expertise, only to hit a wall against elite strikers and run out of runway. Born in Montes Claros in 1990, he discovered jiu-jitsu and MMA late by design (his mother enrolled him to build discipline) and spent over a decade climbing the regional ladder before earning two shots at Dana White's Contender Series. The second time, in August 2019, he submitted undefeated Taylor Johnson to secure his UFC contract at age 29. His debut in November 2019 signaled a rebuilding narrative: a "one-dimensional submission artist with a questionable gas tank," in the words of fight analysts, but an excellent one in that dimension. Over his next five UFC fights, Muniz submitted Bartosz Fabinski, then broke Ronaldo Souza's arm with an armbar in May 2021 to earn Submission of the Year honors. He extended his hot streak to five straight wins by submitting Eryk Anders in December 2021 and decisioning Uriah Hall at UFC 276 in July 2022. For a brief window, Muniz looked like a legitimate threat in a middleweight division searching for contenders.

That momentum evaporated almost immediately. In February 2023, fellow grappler Brendan Allen submitted Muniz via rear-naked choke in the third round, and the Brazilian never recovered. Losses to Paul Craig (TKO, R2), Ikram Aliskerov (TKO, R1), and Edmen Shahbazyan (KO, R1) in rapid succession exposed the flaws beneath his submission excellence: a limited striking game, poor ability to close distance and control the cage, and a tendency to crumble when opponents refused to engage with his grappling and instead walked him down. A narrow split decision over Jun Yong Park in December 2023 briefly suggested stabilization, but back-to-back early stoppages in 2025 sealed his fate. Following the knockout loss to Shahbazyan at UFC 320 in October 2025, Muniz was cut from the roster after six seasons in the promotion.

At his peak, Muniz represented the archetype of the submission specialist thriving in MMA's grappling resurgence. His armbar finishes were clean, his submission rate was elite, and his upset of Ronaldo Souza remained a certified highlight. Yet his story also illustrates a durable problem in modern mixed martial arts: technical excellence in one domain does not compensate for a thin defensive skill set and poor striking. Muniz's reluctance to engage offensively in his final fights, combined with visible cardio concerns, suggested either a loss of confidence or a fundamental mismatch between his tools and the caliber of opponent the UFC was asking him to face. He leaves the sport a gatekeeper-level talent whose peak moment (Souza submission) will outlive his tenure, having proven too specialized to survive at an elite level despite years of hard work grinding his way to opportunity.

Why fans love Muniz

Exciting submission finisher with memorable armbar and RNC victories; Submission of the Year over an iconic grappler (Ronaldo Souza) cemented respect. Hard-working underdog who ground through years on the regional circuit and Dana White's Contender Series before earning his shot.

Why some fans hate Muniz

In recent bouts, perceived as defensive and unwilling to engage, allowing himself to be walked down and knocked out without appearing to take risks. Post-2023, losses have come with minimal output or urgency, frustrating fans expecting the submission-hunting intensity from his earlier UFC run.
