Armen Petrosyan is a 34-year-old Russian-Armenian striker who came to the UFC with serious credentials: an IFMA Muay Thai world championship, a Fight Nights Global Light Heavyweight title, and an impressive record outside the major promotions. He earned his UFC contract via Dana White's Contender Series in October 2021 with a devastating first-round knockout, and opened his Octagon career with three consecutive decision wins over Gregory Rodrigues (in a controversial split decision), AJ Dobson, and Christian Leroy Duncan between February 2022 and June 2023. Those victories suggested a crafty, volume-striking middleweight was settling in at the sport's highest level.
That trajectory collapsed rapidly. Since mid-2023, Petrosyan has lost four of five fights, with three of those losses coming via submission (Rodolfo Vieira's arm-triangle in the first round of their February 2024 bout, and Brunno Ferreira's armbar in March 2025) and one via a spectacular spinning backfist knockout from Shara Magomedov in October 2024. The losses revealed a critical weakness: despite his elite striking pedigree, his takedown defense sits at 41 percent, and he has shown vulnerability when opponents drag him into the grappling exchanges where the sport's sharpest middleweights hunt for submissions.
Petrosyan fights out of a Muay Thai stance, landing 91 percent of his significant strikes from distance and relying heavily on low kicks and clinch work. His record shows six career knockouts and solid volume (517 significant strikes landed across his UFC tenure), but he absorbs a fair amount of damage (3.31 strikes per minute) and has zero submission wins to speak of. Following his loss to Ferreira, the UFC did not renew his contract, ending an experiment that began with promise but ended in frustration. At 34, with a 9-5 record and no current promotion affiliation, his window to realize the UFC belt ambitions he once stated is closing.
