Asu Almabayev is a Kazakh flyweight who represents one of combat sports' most compelling underdog narratives. Born in 1994 in the village of Janatalap and raised by his grandparents, Almabayev turned professional in 2013 but spent over a decade building his resume in the regional circuits: ACB, M-1 Global, Brave Combat Federation, and Fight Nights Global. He became an Interim M-1 Global Flyweight Champion and strung together 13 consecutive victories before finally stepping into the UFC in August 2023 at age 29. That late arrival belied his technical depth. He is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion of Kazakhstan and Asia, and his submission arsenal is lethal: rear-naked chokes, guillotine chokes, armbars, and the occasional Peruvian necktie. On debut he submitted Ode' Osbourne in the second round and earned a Performance of the Night bonus, announcing himself as a real threat in a stacked flyweight division.

In the UFC, Almabayev operates as a patient, output-heavy grappler who hunts the clinch and the choke. He lands most of his significant strikes from the feet (65% of his output) and maintains composure under pressure. His takedown success rate is modest, but on the ground he is dangerous; his clinch work is effective, and his submissions come from both scrambles and deliberate transitions. Over nearly three years in the Octagon, he has compiled a 6-1 record, the lone loss a March 2025 technical knockout to Manel Kape on short notice. That setback proved temporary: Almabayev rebounded with a three-round decision over Jose Ochoa in July 2025 and then submitted former UFC flyweight title challenger Alex Perez via guillotine choke in November, vaulting into the top ten.

Now ranked #8 in the flyweight division, Almabayev represents the antithesis of manufactured hype. He does not court attention, does not trash-talk, and does not demand main events. He fights anyone the UFC puts in front of him, shows up prepared, and executes his game with a workmanlike precision that earned him the respect of the combat sports community. His grappling credentials are internationally credentialed, his output is high, and his record over 12 years as a professional (23-3) speaks to consistency and toughness. In a division populated by flashy strikers and celebrities, Almabayev is the quiet killer: the jiu-jitsu specialist who clinches, circles, and methodically chokes out opponents, one performance bonus at a time.

Why fans love Almabayev

Almabayev operates without ego or trash talk, simply shows up, executes his craft, and gets the job done via submission. He earned his ranking through quiet competence across 12+ years as a professional. His jiu-jitsu acumen (champion of Kazakhstan and Asia in BJJ) and willingness to fight anyone at any time resonate with hardcore fans who value technical excellence over personality.
