Rich Franklin is a Hall of Famer and former UFC Middleweight Champion who embodied the spirit of a rising middleweight division in the mid-2000s. Born in Ohio and trained as a mathematics educator, Franklin transitioned to MMA and earned a title shot by defeating then-champion Evan Tanner at UFC 53 in 2005. He made three successful title defenses, including a dominant unanimous-decision win over David Loiseau and a first-round knockout of season-one TUF standout Nate Quarry, establishing himself as one of the UFC's marquee draws. His reign was cut short by Anderson Silva's striking masterclass at UFC 64, where Silva's clinch-based knee strikes ended Franklin's tenure in under three minutes. Franklin lost a rematch to Silva a year later under similar circumstances but remained a top contender, moving up to light heavyweight and posting victories over elite fighters including former PRIDE champion Wanderlei Silva (twice), top-ranked Yushin Okami, and former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell in a spectacular first-round knockout that earned Knockout of the Night honors.
As a striker, Franklin was technically sound with reliable boxing and exceptional cardio that allowed him to grind out five-round decisions against elite opposition. He was durable and resilient, willing to fight anywhere and anyone in the UFC's top ranks. Though he never reclaimed the middleweight title, his willingness to take on all comers at multiple weight classes and his consistent success against a murderer's row of talent cemented his legacy as one of the sport's most respected competitors.
Beyond his fighting career, Franklin distinguished himself as a ambassador for the sport and later as a senior executive. He co-founded American Fighter clothing brand in 2002, which grew into a mainstream athletic wear line, and served as Vice President of ONE Championship from 2014, overseeing the promotion's U.S. expansion, talent scouting through ONE Warrior Series, and rule approval across American athletic commissions. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2019. Franklin's journey from high school mathematics teacher to global mixed martial artist and sports executive remains one of the more compelling crossover stories in combat sports.
