Danaa Batgerel is a Mongolian mixed martial artist who carved out a notable if brief tenure in the UFC's bantamweight division as a heavy-handed knockout specialist. Born in rural Mongolia and trained by his longtime coach Jadamba Narantungalag, Batgerel initially pursued kickboxing before transitioning to mixed martial arts in 2009. He compiled an impressive 7-1 record in regional Mongolian promotions, including a notable victory over future UFC fighter Kai Kara-France, before joining the UFC in August 2019.
Batgerel announced himself to UFC audiences with an exciting Fight of the Night performance in his debut loss to Alateng Heili, immediately signaling his aggressive striking style and refusal to back down. Over the next two years, he became known as a devastating finisher, stringing together three consecutive first-round stoppages against Guido Cannetti (KO), Kevin Natividad (TKO), and Brandon Davis (TKO), the latter earning him a Performance of the Night bonus. His fighting style emphasized heavy hands, exceptional knockout power, and a willingness to throw spinning techniques; he landed 67% of his UFC wins by KO or TKO.
In 2022, Batgerel's momentum stalled. A spinning backfist TKO loss to Chris Gutierrez in March 2022 exposed cracks in his defensive footwork, and subsequent decision and TKO losses to Kyung Ho Kang and Brady Hiestand in 2022-2023 cemented a downward trend. In June 2023, after fighting out his UFC contract, the promotion elected not to renew his deal. He has since competed in Karate Combat, where he has showcased his technical striking in a hybrid ruleset, including a striking flying knee knockout victory. At 33 years old and training out of Jackson Wink MMA Academy in New Mexico, Batgerel remains an active competitor seeking redemption outside the UFC.
