Brad Katona, the only two-time winner of The Ultimate Fighter in the show's history, is a Canadian mixed martial artist who built his career on solid fundamentals and tireless volume striking. Starting his martial arts journey at five years old, Katona earned black belts in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Shotokan Karate before transitioning to MMA professionally in 2014. After assembling an undefeated record in smaller promotions, he relocated to Dublin in 2017 to train under renowned coach John Kavanagh at Straight Blast Gym Ireland, a move that solidified his technical base.
Katona's first UFC run began spectacularly when he won The Ultimate Fighter 27 featherweight tournament in 2018, defeating Kyler Phillips and Bryce Mitchell before winning the finale against Jay Cucciniello via unanimous decision. However, his initial UFC tenure proved difficult, and he was cut after going 1-2 in his first three fights. Rather than fade, Katona rebuilt his career outside the UFC, compiling four consecutive victories that earned him the Brave CF Bantamweight Championship in 2022. His success outside the organization led to an invitation to compete on The Ultimate Fighter 31 at bantamweight, where he again dominated the tournament and defeated Cody Gibson in the final to become the first and only two-time TUF champion, earning Fight of the Night honors in the process.
Katona's fighting style is defined by high-volume striking and solid wrestling fundamentals. He lands significant strikes at an elite rate of 4.81 per minute and stays primarily at distance (73% of his strikes), controlling opponents through pace and consistency rather than explosive power or flashy finishes. His submission game, featuring two guillotine chokes and two rear-naked chokes in his career, serves as a secondary tool. However, his return to the UFC proved challenging. After losing a unanimous decision to Garrett Armfield in January 2024, Katona won over Jesse Butler but then faced Jean Matsumoto in a losing effort in October 2024. His final UFC fight came at UFC 315 in May 2025, when he suffered a shocking 64-second knockout loss to Bekzat Almakhan, marking the first time in his career he was finished. The loss triggered his release from the UFC roster in June 2025, leaving Katona searching for a new fighting home at age 33.
Why fans love Katona
Two-time Ultimate Fighter champion and the only fighter to accomplish that feat; works hard, trains under John Kavanagh at a respected gym, and consistently puts on points-based fights that showcase solid striking fundamentals and pace.
Why some fans hate Katona
Has struggled at the elite UFC level and relies heavily on decision wins rather than exciting finishes; streak of recent losses, including a rare knockout loss to Almakhan, raised questions about his ceiling and willingness to take risks.
