Brian Stann is a Marine Corps veteran and decorated combat soldier whose MMA career is inseparable from his military background. Born in Japan and raised in Pennsylvania, Stann graduated from the Naval Academy in 2003, served as an infantry officer, and earned the Silver Star in 2005 for his leadership during Operation Matador in Iraq, where he commanded his platoon through a six-day ambush without losing a single Marine. He began fighting while still on active duty, building an undefeated record in the WEC before capturing the Light Heavyweight Championship in 2008. After the WEC merged with the UFC, Stann transitioned to the UFC in 2009 and moved down to middleweight, where he compiled a 12-6 record through 2013.

As a fighter, Stann was an explosive striker with heavy hands and good clinch control, capable of brutal ground-and-pound once he took opponents down. He notched impressive wins over Chris Leben (TKO, R1), Jorge Santiago (TKO, R2), and Alessio Sakara (KO, R1), earning three Fight of the Night bonuses in the UFC. However, he struggled against elite-level grapplers and strikers, suffering losses to Krzysztof Soszynski (submission), Phil Davis (decision), Chael Sonnen (submission), Michael Bisping (decision), and Wanderlei Silva (knockout). His in-cage record never quite reached the title contention level, but his final bout against Silva in 2013 became his legacy: a chaotic, thrilling showdown that earned both fighters Fight of the Night honors and showcased Stann's warrior spirit until the knockout in round two.

What truly cemented Stann's place in MMA culture, however, was his conduct outside the cage and later as a broadcaster. During his fight with Sakara, after landing the knockout blow, Stann immediately sat up and motioned to the referee that his opponent was done rather than landing additional shots. This single moment of restraint and sportsmanship earned universal praise from Dana White, fellow champion Jon Jones, and the entire MMA community. After retiring in 2013, Stann became a color commentator for Fox Sports and the UFC, where his articulate, intelligent analysis and genuine respect for the sport made him a fan favorite. He stepped back from broadcasting in 2017 to pursue business opportunities, but his recent return to the UFC broadcast team in 2025 sparked outpouring of fan enthusiasm, with many calling him the best color commentator in the promotion's history. Stann embodies a rare archetype in combat sports: a genuine hero whose character and intelligence exceeded his fighting record, and whose absence from the booth has been deeply felt.

Why fans love Stann

His military service and heroism, his obvious intelligence and articulate commentary, his in-cage sportsmanship (the Sakara moment became legendary), his consistency as a classy role model, and his humility. Fans regard him as 'one of the classiest people on Earth' (Dana White's words) and repeatedly cite him as the best color commentator in UFC history.
