Albert Duraev is a Russian middleweight with one of the most submission-heavy finishing records in the UFC. A product of wrestling since age 10, Duraev earned ACB championships at both welterweight and middleweight before earning his shot at the global stage via Dana White's Contender Series in 2021. He arrived in the UFC as a complete grappler with a law degree and a proven track record of finishing opponents via neck cranks, armbars, triangle chokes, and rear naked chokes. In October 2021, Duraev made his Octagon debut against Roman Kopylov and delivered a patient, control-based performance to earn a unanimous decision. The victory established him as a credible middleweight prospect in a division hungry for submission artists.
Duraev's calling card is his relentless ground work and submission hunting. With nine submission wins in his pro record and nine of his 16 victories coming via submission, he represents a specialist's approach to MMA: take the fight down, exhaust the opponent, and hunt the finish. His statistics show a fighter who operates almost exclusively from the ground, landing 27% of his significant strikes there compared to 72% standing. Seven first-round finishes across his career underscore his ability to end fights decisively once he locks in a position. At 34 years old and with pro experience dating to 2011, Duraev brings veterans' poise to the middleweight gauntlet.
The journey has not been seamless. In June 2022, Duraev faced Joaquin Buckley and suffered a second-round TKO when eye swelling forced the ringside doctor to wave off the fight. The loss tested his resolve but did not derail him. By March 2023, Duraev rebounded with a hard-fought split decision over Chidi Njokuani, demonstrating the kind of grit expected from a former ACB titlist. Most recently, in July 2023, he submitted Junyong Park via rear naked choke, adding to his growing library of submission finishes. Duraev remains an active force at middleweight, a quiet killer in the truest sense: a wrestler-first submission specialist who lets his finishing rate speak louder than any callout or trash talk.
