Junto Nakatani is a 27-year-old Japanese professional boxer who became one of the sport's most accomplished multi-division champions before suffering his first professional loss in May 2026. Born January 1, 1998, Nakatani turned pro at 17 and built an undefeated record of 31-0 (24 KOs) by combining sharp combinations, powerful uppercuts, and relentless pressure to systematically break down opponents across multiple weight classes.

Nakatani's championship resume is exceptional. He won the WBO flyweight title in 2020 by dominating Giemel Magramo, successfully defending twice before moving up. In May 2023, he captured the vacant WBO super flyweight title against Andrew Moloney with a stunning 12th-round knockout that won him Knockout of the Year honors from The Ring magazine, ESPN, CBS Sports, Top Rank, and The Sweet Science. He then jumped to bantamweight in early 2024, seizing the WBC title from Alexandro Santiago via sixth-round TKO and making four consecutive title defenses, including a unification victory over IBF champion Ryosuke Nishida in June 2025. His willingness to move up in weight against quality opposition made him a respected figure in boxing worldwide.

Nakatani's career reached its peak on May 2, 2026, when he challenged undisputed super-bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue at Tokyo Dome in what journalists and analysts called the biggest fight in Japanese boxing history. Fighting Inoue, widely regarded as the world's best pound-for-pound boxer, Nakatani faced a speed and precision test unlike any before. Despite a competitive effort, Inoue's superior timing and accuracy prevailed, and Nakatani lost a unanimous decision (116-112, 115-113, 116-112) while suffering a fractured left eye socket from an 11th-round uppercut. The loss marked the end of Nakatani's undefeated streak and positioned him as a former champion with a resume strong enough to suggest a bounce-back path, though his first loss came against the sport's elite.

Why fans love Nakatani

Nakatani earned respect for his championship pedigree across three divisions, his polished fundamentals, and his willingness to jump up in weight and face elite opposition. His 2023 knockout of Moloney was a thing of beauty and won him admirers globally. Japanese fans connected with his steady rise and technical excellence.
