Cong Wang is a Chinese mixed martial artist who arrived in the UFC with one of the most decorated striking backgrounds in women's combat sports. A Sanda gold medalist at the World Championships and Asian Games, an amateur boxing silver medalist, and the former Kunlun Fight Women's Lightweight Champion, Wang made her mark on kickboxing's world stage as well. Before signing with the UFC, she compiled a notable win over future UFC champion Valentina Shevchenko at Kunlun Fight 33 in 2015, establishing her credentials on the international stage. Her transition to MMA was seamless, as she won her first three fights before earning her UFC contract with a first-round submission victory at Road to UFC Season 3 in May 2024.
Wang announced herself to the UFC with a spectacular knockout of Victoria Leonardo in August 2024, finishing the fight in just 1:02 and earning Performance of the Night honors. Her striking pedigree was on full display: crisp combinations, sharp footwork, and genuine one-punch power earned her a fan's choice debut of the year nomination. However, the loss to Gabriella Fernandes in November 2024 revealed a gap in her submission defense, as she was dropped by a left hook and submitted in the second round, marking her first MMA loss and serving as a correction to overconfidence.
Since then, Wang has shown the grit and adaptability required at the UFC level. She rebounded with a hard-fought unanimous decision over Bruna Brasil at UFC 312, followed by wins against Ariane da Silva and Eduarda Moura, both decided by scorecards after three grinding rounds. Her most recent fight exemplified her evolution: though she landed a clean right hand in round one that bloodied Moura's nose, she had to survive intense grappling exchanges, including two separate rear-naked choke attempts, and ultimately secure victory through pressure and positioning rather than pure striking dominance.
At age 33, ranked #12 in the UFC women's flyweight division, Wang represents the rise of international fighting talent. She remains a knockout threat with her striking background, but her recent performances show a fighter maturing into the UFC's grind and learning to win rounds through wrestling and composure. Fans who tune in expect either explosive striking fireworks or a technically sound grappling exchange, with Wang proving she can weather storms and fight through adversity.
Why fans love Wang
Wang's striking credentials and one-punch power earn respect from technical fans. Her debut knockout was sensational and rewarded with Performance of the Night recognition. She has shown resilience and grit in grinding out decisions after her first loss, suggesting a fighter willing to evolve and fight through adversity rather than exploit favorable matchups.
