Lyman Merrill Good, known as 'American Cyborg', is a 38-year-old welterweight veteran with a 21-6 record who has competed at the highest levels of MMA across Bellator, CFFC, and the UFC. Born and raised in Spanish Harlem, New York, Good's path to fighting was shaped by his mother's decision to channel his energy into martial arts as a young man. He rose through the regional ranks and early Bellator tournaments to become the promotion's inaugural welterweight champion in 2010, defeating Omar De La Cruz in the tournament finals. Good also won Bellator's Season 1 Welterweight Tournament and holds CFFC gold, establishing himself as a multi-time titleholder before entering the UFC in 2015.

As a fighter, Good is a power puncher whose record is defined by his knockout rate: 11 of his 21 wins come by KO or TKO, and he lands 63% of his significant strikes at distance. He is a standing fighter first, with over 75% of his strikes thrown from range, though he is not one-dimensional and can finish via submission when the opportunity arises. His fight with Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos in 2017, a competitive split-decision loss after a two-year absence, earned him Fight of the Night honors and proved he could hang in back-and-forth wars even after an extended layoff.

Good's career was interrupted by a USADA suspension in late 2016, stemming from an out-of-competition sample that tested positive for 1-androstenedione. Good claimed the substance came from a tainted supplement, and he was suspended for six months retroactive to the date of his initial suspension. The absence sidelined him until mid-2017 and derailed momentum at a critical stage of his UFC tenure. His return saw mixed results: a knockout of Ben Saunders in 2018, followed by losses to elite grapplers Demian Maia (first-round submission) and Belal Muhammad (unanimous decision in June 2020). At 38 and still active, Good remains a dangerous puncher and a respected figure in the New York martial arts community, where he trains and instructs at Tiger Schulmann's MMA.

Why fans love Good

Documented toughness and resilience: came back from a career-threatening USADA suspension layoff to continue competing. Heavy knockout power (52% of wins by KO/TKO) is entertaining. Respected instructor and trainer in New York martial arts community (Tiger Schulmann's MMA). Remains active into his late 30s.

Why some fans hate Good

USADA suspension in 2016 for ingestion of 1-androstenedione (tainted supplement) was a competitive integrity issue, even though ruled unintentional. Long layoff from competition (over two years) disrupted his career momentum and raised questions about his level upon return. Loss to Demian Maia in his post-suspension return was a quick submission that did not inspire confidence.
