Damir Ismagulov is a Russian and Kazakh lightweight who carved out a solid mid-tier UFC career built on grit and consistency rather than flash. Born in 1991, he excelled in combat sports from childhood, eventually establishing himself as a legitimate prospect through regional success in Russia, most notably winning and defending the M-1 Global lightweight championship before signing with the UFC in late 2018. Over five years in the promotion, Ismagulov posted a 4-2 record, opening with four straight unanimous or split decisions over Joel Alvarez, Thiago Moises, Rafael Alves, and Guram Kutateladze, demonstrating a methodical control-based style that accumulated points through activity and positioning rather than dynamic exchanges. His trajectory shifted in late 2022 when he stepped up in competition and faced rising lightweight Arman Tsarukyan, losing a close unanimous decision. A subsequent loss to Grant Dawson in July 2023 came on the tail end of a contract dispute: Ismagulov had announced his retirement via Instagram in January 2023, citing health concerns, but honoured the final bout owed to the UFC before his contract was not renewed. Since departing the promotion, he has competed in regional MMA, most notably posting a spinning kick knockout victory in 2024, suggesting he remains active despite no longer being part of the UFC roster.
Why some fans hate Ismagulov
