Dmitry Bivol is a Russian professional boxer who has emerged as one of the sport's most technically skilled and underrated champions. Born in Kyrgyzstan in 1990 and raised in Saint Petersburg from age 11, Bivol turned professional in 2014 after compiling a decorated amateur record of 268 wins and just 15 losses, including a gold medal at the 2013 World Combat Games. He steadily built his record through the late 2010s, capturing the WBA interim light-heavyweight title in 2016 before being elevated to the full WBA (Super) championship in 2017, a title he held with distinction for seven years.

Bivol's defining moment came in 2022 when, as a substantial underdog, he handed the celebrated Canelo Alvarez the most comprehensive defeat of his career, winning by unanimous decision in a masterclass of technical boxing. That performance earned Bivol recognition as Fighter of the Year from both The Ring magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America, establishing him firmly as an elite, pound-for-pound force in professional boxing.

His signature style is one of clinical precision and ring intelligence. Rather than relying on raw power, Bivol dominates opponents through superior footwork, an exceptionally fluid jab, perfect timing, and devastating counter-punches. He outboxes rivals methodically, using angles and accuracy to make them look outclassed. His 2022 win over Canelo and his subsequent undisputed light-heavyweight championship wins over Artur Beterbiev in 2025 proved his ability to perform at boxing's highest level against elite opposition.

In February 2025, Bivol achieved undisputed light-heavyweight champion status by defeating Artur Beterbiev by majority decision in their rematch, avenging an earlier loss and becoming the first fighter in history to go the distance with Beterbiev twice. He now holds the WBC, WBO, WBA, and IBF light-heavyweight titles alongside the prestigious Ring magazine and IBO belts, cementing his place as one of boxing's most dominant and respected champions.

Why fans love Bivol

Bivol is universally admired for his skill, composure, and sportsmanship. He makes difficult opponents look helpless through pure boxing IQ and technical mastery rather than aggression or showboating. His humble demeanor, willingness to take tough fights, and underdog triumph over Canelo have earned him respect across the boxing world.
