Zhalgas Zhumagulov is a 36-year-old Kazakh flyweight who emerged from Fight Nights Global as a decorated regional champion before entering the UFC in 2020. His octagon tenure proved frustrating: despite taking on strong competition and consistently receiving favorable scorecards from media analysts, he compiled a 1-6 record, including a brutal three-fight stretch of split-decision losses. Most maddening to observers was the pattern of controversial judging, where independent outlets often favored Zhumagulov while judges ruled against him. That disconnect between performance and result defined his UFC era and ultimately led to his contract not being renewed in July 2023.
After his release, Zhumagulov pivoted to Oktagon MMA, a European promotion, and discovered immediate success. He won convincingly over Aaron Aby in his debut and has since established himself as the division's top contender. In June 2025, he captured the Oktagon Flyweight Championship with a dominant unanimous decision over Beno Adamia, becoming the first Kazakh-born champion in the promotion's history. He successfully defended the belt in December 2025, cementing his status as Oktagon's premier 126-pound fighter.
As a fighter, Zhumagulov is a control-oriented technician who uses wrestling, grappling, and ground-and-pound to dictate pace and accumulate points. He is not a high-volume striker but rather a suffocating presence who prefers to control opponents on the canvas. His guillotine submission of Jerome Rivera at UFC 264 showcased his submission credentials, though his bread and butter is grinding out decisions through positional dominance. Now at the top of his game in a regional promotion, Zhumagulov has reinvented his career narrative from a UFC journeyman plagued by bad luck to an undefeated champion abroad, a redemption story that resonates with fighters and fans who believe the octagon was simply not his stage.
Why fans love Zhumagulov
Zhumagulov represents a redemption arc: a technically sound veteran who refused to quit after UFC rejection and has proven himself a champion elsewhere. His willingness to compete against the best available (high strength of schedule in the UFC) and his undefeated run post-release demonstrates resilience and heart. He carries the pride of representing Kazakhstan on the global stage.
