Kron Gracie carries the weight of one of combat sports' most storied names. Son of Rickson Gracie and grandson of Helio, the co-founder of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Kron became a world champion and ADCC gold medalist in the grappling ranks, building a 51-match submission streak at the highest levels of competition. When he transitioned to mixed martial arts in 2014, he won his first five professional bouts, each by submission, establishing himself as a legitimate threat in the cage.
His UFC debut in February 2019 against Alex Caceres showcased his finishing prowess: a slick rear-naked choke in the opening round that earned him a Performance of the Night bonus. For a moment, it seemed the elite grappler would seamlessly translate his championship jiu-jitsu into Octagon success. But that promise collided with the realities of modern mixed martial arts, where submission mastery alone no longer guarantees victory at the highest level.
Kron's second UFC fight, a bout with Cub Swanson in October 2019, became the turning point. Rather than taking the fight to the ground where his advantage was overwhelming, Gracie chose to stand and trade strikes, ultimately losing a unanimous decision. The loss sparked public criticism from his own corner, including his father Rickson, who questioned why Kron had abandoned the grappling game entirely. After a four-year absence, he returned to face Charles Jourdain at UFC 288 in May 2023, only to lose another unanimous decision. A final knockout loss to Bryce Mitchell in December 2024 and the non-renewal of his UFC contract in June 2025 marked the end of his time in the promotion.
Kron Gracie's career stands as a cautionary tale about the limits of specialization in modern MMA, even when that specialty comes from the most decorated jiu-jitsu family in history. A master of the mat and a legitimate submission threat, he nonetheless struggled to bridge the gap between grappling excellence and the well-rounded demands of professional mixed martial arts.
Why fans love Gracie
Bearer of the Gracie name and a legitimate submission master with an elite competitive pedigree spanning generations. Fans appreciate his technical mastery on the ground and the historical lineage he represents.
Why some fans hate Gracie
Criticized for not leveraging his world-class grappling advantage, particularly his loss to Cub Swanson where he chose to strike instead of taking the fight to the ground. His family, including his father Rickson, publicly called out his decision-making. Faced criticism from UFC president Dana White and commentators for appearing passive and limited in performances.
