Park Hyun-sung, a South Korean mixed martial artist and self-taught fighter who began training at 24 after military service, has emerged as one of the UFC flyweight division's most exciting submission specialists. Fighting under the nickname 'Peace of Mind' owing to his serene demeanor both in and out of the cage, Park dominated his early professional career through Double G Fighting Championship before earning a spot in Road to UFC Season 1's flyweight tournament in 2022. He won that tournament decisively, submitting three opponents in succession and securing a UFC contract with a third-round rear-naked choke victory over Seung-guk Choi. His technique and composure were evident early in his UFC run: he recorded a Performance of the Night award for his second-round TKO of Shannon Ross in December 2023 and executed a clinical first-round submission of Carlos Hernandez in May 2025.
Park's fighting style centers on submission grappling, particularly the rear-naked choke and other forms of back control. He lands significant strikes from range (129 of 169 landed strikes from standing) but is at his most dangerous when he establishes top position or takes the back. He has finished nine of his ten wins by submission or knockout, and did not go to a decision in his first seven professional fights. However, the latter half of 2025 exposed a critical vulnerability: grappling exchanges against elite-level opponents. In August, he stepped into a main event against rising star Tatsuro Taira on short notice and was submitted via face crank in the second round after poor defensive positioning. Two months later, he faced another submission loss to Bruno Silva via rear-naked choke in the third round, marking the first back-to-back losses of his career.
At 29 years old and 10-2 overall, Park remains a dangerous and technically proficient submission threat with legitimate title-contending tools. His calm demeanor and finishing instinct have built a dedicated fanbase drawn to his artistry and composure under pressure. Yet the recent losses to top contenders represent a fork in the road: success against the next tier of competition will propel him toward a title run, while another setback could releggate him to gatekeeper status. Fans and analysts alike are watching to see whether Park's submission mastery will carry him through elite grappling exchanges or whether his vulnerability under top pressure will define his ceiling.
