Gilbert 'Durinho' Burns is a decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion who became one of the most well-rounded welterweights of his era. After a strong run at lightweight and welterweight — with wins over Tyron Woodley, Demian Maia, and later Jorge Masvidal — he earned a 2021 title shot against Kamaru Usman.
Though the belt eluded him, Burns remained a top contender for years, most memorably pushing the feared Khamzat Chimaev to the limit in a Fight-of-the-Night war that showcased his heart. A grappling ace who developed genuine knockout power and crisp boxing, he retired a respected and reliably exciting veteran of the division.
Why fans love Burns
World-class grappling married to real knockout power, a willingness to war with anyone, and a humble, likable demeanor. His Chimaev battle showed his heart.
