Hakeem Dawodu

Hakeem Dawodu is a Canadian featherweight whose career arc mirrors both the promise of elite striking talent and the frustration of stalled momentum at the UFC level. Born in Calgary to Nigerian and Jamaican parents, Dawodu's journey began in a Muay Thai gym at age 16 as a tool for anger management and rehabilitation after juvenile detention. He developed into a skilled striker, compiling a 42-5 amateur Muay Thai record before turning pro in 2014. His early MMA career in the World Series of Fighting was marked by aggressive finishes, and when he signed with the UFC in 2017, he seemed destined for contention.

From 2018 to 2019, Dawodu was on an impressive run, winning five straight UFC fights and earning a Performance of the Night bonus for a third-round head-kick knockout of Yoshinori Horie at UFC 240. His striking was precise, his finishing instinct was sharp, and he appeared to be ascending toward title contention. However, starting in 2021, his trajectory shifted sharply. He lost unanimous decisions to Movsar Evloev and Julian Erosa (after missing weight by 3.5 pounds), then suffered what many observers regard as a clear robbery decision loss to Cub Swanson in August 2023. That fight was scored for Dawodu by 11 of 13 media members and over 65 percent of fans, yet all three judges sided with Swanson.

What followed was even more damaging to Dawodu's career than the loss itself: nearly two years of UFC limbo. Despite remaining healthy and ready to compete, Dawodu says he was repeatedly told by UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby that another fight was coming, only to be released in June 2025 via the internet without explanation. The prolonged uncertainty tested his resolve, but Dawodu refused to retire. After being cast out by the UFC, he signed with Canadian-based Unified MMA and won his debut there in October 2025, signaling that the chapter may not be closed. Whether he can rebuild enough momentum to return to the UFC or establish himself as a regional champion depends on whether the technical striker who once seemed destined for the featherweight elite can recapture the form and fortune that eluded him.
