Jens Pulver, nicknamed 'Little Evil', is the inaugural UFC Lightweight Champion and a foundational figure in modern mixed martial arts. Born in Sunnyside, Washington in 1974, Pulver rose from a wrestling background to become the first fighter to hold the 155-pound title, winning it by unanimous decision over Caol Uno at UFC 30 in February 2001 at just 26 years old, making him the youngest lightweight champion in UFC history. His path to the top came through disciplined training under Pat Miletich in Iowa, where he developed a distinctive 'sprawl and brawl' style that combined defensive wrestling footwork with sharp, heavy-handed boxing combinations.

Pulver made two title defenses that cemented his legacy. Against Dennis Hallman at UFC 33, he landed a thunderous left hook that visibly rattled his opponent and secured a unanimous decision. But his career-defining moment came in his second defense against the previously undefeated B.J. Penn at UFC 35 in January 2002. Penn, a world-class grappler and striking prodigy, mounted Pulver twice and nearly finished him with an armbar in the second round. Yet Pulver, drawing on sheer willpower and excellent defensive grappling, turned the tide in the later rounds and ultimately prevailed by majority decision. Post-fight, he broke into tears, saying 'On the ground again... I've been beat on my whole life, this is nothing' - a raw emotional moment that revealed how much the victory meant to a man who had overcome severe hardship to reach the sport's pinnacle.

Pulver's reign was cut short when he left the UFC in 2002 after a contract dispute over pay. Though he competed in other promotions including Shooto and the IFL, and pursued professional boxing with an undefeated record, his flame dimmed. A loss to Joe Lauzon via 48-second knockout in 2006 marked the beginning of the end. Pulver officially retired from combat sports in 2014. In 2023, he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in recognition of his historic contributions as the lightweight division's first champion and one of the sport's most influential pioneers. His technical legacy - the proof that defensive wrestling and precise striking could overcome raw athleticism - remains studied by fighters to this day.

Why fans love Pulver

Pulver earned deep respect for his resilience and skill, especially his legendary majority-decision win over B.J. Penn where he showcased pure heart and grappling intelligence after being dominated on the ground. His emotional post-fight speech - breaking into tears and saying 'On the ground again... I've been beat on my whole life, this is nothing' - revealed a fighter who had overcome genuine hardship. He is revered as a technical pioneer and foundational figure who helped elevate the lightweight division.

Why some fans hate Pulver

Pulver left the UFC in 2002 over a contract dispute after just two title defenses, which frustrated fans who wanted to see him defend his throne against more challengers. Some view this as premature abandonment of his reign. Additionally, documented rivalry and negative comments directed at B.J. Penn generated divided opinion, though Penn remained his most celebrated opponent.
