Jessica Aguilar is a Mexican-American pioneer of women's mixed martial arts who has competed professionally for nearly two decades. Born in Houston in 1982, she turned pro in 2006 and spent much of her early career in Bellator and other regional promotions, where she became known for her submission grappling skills and wrestling-based control. She won the inaugural World Series of Fighting Women's Strawweight Championship in 2014 and successfully defended the title twice before earning her release to join the UFC in 2015. At age 32, Aguilar entered the organization as an experienced veteran but found herself outmatched by elite UFC strawweights. She lost her debut to Claudia Gadelha, fell to Cortney Casey, and then suffered quick defeats to rising prospects Zhang Weili and Marina Rodriguez before being released by the promotion in 2019.

Aguilar's fighting style reflects her grappling-first approach. She has recorded seven submission wins across her career, including victories by arm-triangle and triangle choke in her Bellator years. Her clinch and ground work are her primary weapons, and she relies on control and positional dominance rather than striking volume. While her UFC record was underwhelming (1-4), her single victory over Jodie Esquibel in 2018 showed she could still execute her game plan and secure rounds against quality opponents.

Her technical credentials run deep: she won gold at the FILA Grappling World Championships in 2009 and 2010 and was named Female Fan Favorite of the Year in 2010. Now in her 40s, Aguilar continues to compete internationally, most recently appearing in Rizin FF and Xtreme Fighting Championships. She remains an ambassador for women's MMA and is openly LGBTQ+, having carved out a career across an era when the sport's women had few platforms. Her story is one of persistence and respect earned through technical skill and a willingness to test herself against the best available opposition.

Why fans love Aguilar

Durability, submission expertise, and a fearless approach to competition. Won 2010 Female Fan Favorite of the Year. Openly LGBTQ+ and represented women's MMA when the sport had few platforms. A grappling credentials holder (FILA world champion) who proved technical skill across decades.
