Kyler Phillips is a bantamweight whose elite jiu-jitsu pedigree and early UFC promise have given way to frustrating inconsistency at the sport's highest level. A product of the legendary Gracie Academy in Torrance, California—he was taken there at age three—Phillips accumulated world-class grappling credentials, including an IBJJF jiu-jitsu world championship at blue belt and a Carlson Gracie brown belt, before turning pro at 16. His rapid rise through the regional scene earned him spots on Dana White's Contender Series (a 46-second knockout) and The Ultimate Fighter, leading to a UFC debut in 2020.

Phillips opened his Octagon career with tremendous momentum, winning his first three UFC bouts and reaching a career peak in March 2021 when he decisively out-struck Song Yadong via unanimous decision. His elite speed and technical prowess were on full display—the blueprint for what made him a prospect. But a majority-decision loss to Raulian Paiva later that year marked the beginning of a slide that has persisted ever since. While he has picked up wins, including a slick triangle armbar submission of Marcelo Rojo and a decision over Pedro Munhoz, he has now lost three consecutive fights to Rob Font, Vinicius Oliveira, and Charles Jourdain, all by unanimous decision. Analysts have repeatedly noted the same pattern: Phillips starts strong but fades in the later rounds, struggling with cardio and consistency as opponents adjust to his game.

Despite the recent stumble, Phillips remains a draw in the octagon. He has earned three Fight of the Night bonuses, including one in his most recent loss to Jourdain, signaling that judges and fans see value in his technical exchanges. His grappling threat is real, and his speed remains a genuine asset. But at 12-4, the narrative has shifted from prospect to cautionary tale—a fighter with all the tools and pedigree but not yet the refinement or durability to convert that into consistent wins against elite bantamweights. Whether he can tighten his approach and recapture his 2021 form remains an open question.

Why fans love Phillips

Elite jiu-jitsu credentials from prestigious Gracie Academy lineage; electric speed and technical grappling that creates highlight-reel submission opportunities; three Fight of the Night awards show he produces entertaining bouts even in losses.

Why some fans hate Phillips

Inconsistency and fading in later rounds against quality opposition frustrates fans who see the technical talent; recent string of unanimous decision losses against top bantamweights reads as underperformance despite his skills. Testing positive for ostarine in 2023 (suspended six months) raised questions about professionalism.
