Mark Godbeer is an English heavyweight who took an unconventional path to combat sports stardom. Starting his MMA career relatively late at age 25 after running a plastering business, he built an impressive regional resume that culminated in winning the BAMMA heavyweight championship in 2015. Between 2012 and 2016, he compiled an undefeated run in BAMMA while also appearing in Bellator MMA, establishing himself as a dominant force outside the UFC. His success at that level earned him a UFC contract in September 2016, when he was 32 years old.
Godbeer's UFC tenure proved challenging despite flashes of competence. He debuted against Justin Ledet at UFC Fight Night 99 in November 2016 and suffered a first-round submission loss, exposing vulnerabilities in his grappling against elite-level opposition. He bounced back with an impressive unanimous decision victory over Daniel Spitz in March 2017, followed by a controversial DQ win over heavyweight Walt Harris at UFC 217 when Harris landed an illegal head kick. However, these moments of success couldn't sustain momentum - he lost his final UFC fight to Dmitriy Sosnovskiy via second-round submission in March 2018 and announced his retirement from MMA in September 2018.
In the cage, Godbeer was a pure heavyweight striker with devastating knockout power. Sixty-nine percent of his UFC wins came by KO or TKO, and he landed significant strikes predominantly from distance and in the clinch. His striking defense was respectable at 54%, but his takedown defense (29%) and submission escapes proved to be critical liabilities when facing top-tier grapplers. At age 39, Godbeer has since transitioned to bare-knuckle boxing, including a stint as Valor Bare Knuckle's heavyweight tournament champion, continuing his career in combat sports outside the UFC.
