Matt Mitrione's path to the octagon is unconventional. A former defensive lineman for Purdue University who washed out of the NFL after devastating foot injuries, Mitrione found a second act in mixed martial arts. He burst onto the UFC scene in 2009 after appearing on The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights, immediately making waves with a TKO of the internet-famous Kimbo Slice. For several years, Mitrione was a fixture in the heavyweight division, racking up eye-catching knockout wins over fighters like Christian Morecraft, Derrick Lewis, and Shawn Jordan. His striking is the foundation of his game: explosive, powerful, and technically sound from the feet, landing significant strikes at a high rate. However, his rise stalled when he faced elite-level competition, suffering a knockout loss to Roy Nelson in 2012 and a submission loss to Brendan Schaub in 2013 that exposed his vulnerability against high-level wrestlers and submission artists.
Mitrione's UFC career took a darker turn in April 2013 when he was briefly suspended after making inflammatory comments about transgender heavyweight Fallon Fox in an interview, calling her a 'freak' and worse. Though the suspension was lifted after two weeks, the incident raised questions about his judgment outside the cage. Inside it, his form remained inconsistent. After a string of wins, his final UFC bout came against Travis Browne in January 2016 and ended in controversy: Browne struck Mitrione in the eye twice during the fight, leaving Mitrione with grotesque swelling by the third round, when Browne finished him via TKO. Browne denied intent and claimed the pokes were accidents, but fans and analysts questioned whether the damage should have been prevented by stricter refereeing.
With his UFC contract expiring, Mitrione signed with Bellator MMA in 2016, where he achieved the crowning accomplishment of his career: a first-round knockout of legendary heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko in June 2017. That victory remains one of the biggest upsets in modern heavyweight MMA. Though age has caught up with him and his role in the sport has shifted to that of a gatekeeper and occasional title-fight stepping stone, Mitrione remains a recognizable name and an entertaining striker whose power-based style and underdog narrative have made him a durable draw on fight cards for over a decade.
Why fans love Mitrione
Mitrione's blue-collar backstory (NFL journeyman turned fighter) and his explosive striking style generate respect. Fans appreciate his wins over notable names and especially the shocking Fedor victory. His willingness to fight strong competition and his power in the octagon make him entertaining.
Why some fans hate Mitrione
Mitrione made controversial public comments in 2013 calling transgender fighter Fallon Fox a 'lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak' and criticizing her licensing to fight. He was briefly suspended by the UFC over these remarks. Additionally, his loss to Travis Browne in 2016 was widely disputed due to repeated eye pokes that left him severely injured; although Browne denied malice, the controversy and repeated fouls tainted the finish and raised questions about accountability.
