Melquizael Costa da Conceição, known as 'The Dalmatian', is a 29-year-old Brazilian featherweight who has become one of the UFC's most compelling rising prospects. Born and raised in Porto de Moz, Pará, Costa spent his childhood facing severe bullying and social isolation due to vitiligo, an autoimmune condition that causes loss of skin pigmentation. He turned to fighting as a refuge and a means of building confidence. After losing his older brother and biggest supporter, Natanael, to a workplace accident in 2013, Costa channeled his grief into pursuing a professional MMA career at age 17 to honor his memory. He spent over a decade grinding through the regional circuit in Brazil and the LFA, working odd jobs and selling popsicles on the street to fund his training at Chute Boxe Bauru.

Costa's UFC debut came on short notice in January 2023, and he lost that fight to Thiago Moisés. However, he regrouped and has since compiled a 7-2 record in the promotion, punctuated by an exceptional 2025 that saw him rack up three wins and earn both a Performance of the Night bonus (vs. Dan Ige, stopping him via first-round spinning back kick) and a Fight of the Night bonus (vs. Julian Erosa). His diverse finishing ability - nine knockouts, eight submissions, and 11 first-round finishes in the UFC - makes him a perpetual threat to end fights on the feet or the mat. He earned his first UFC headliner in May 2026, though he lost a unanimous decision to Arnold Allen.

What sets Costa apart beyond his technical skills is his magnetism as a person and advocate. He is deliberately visible about his vitiligo, dyeing his hair in bold colors and painting his face as 'The Dalmatian' during weigh-ins, and he actively uses his platform to inspire children living with the same condition. Fans are drawn to his genuine joy inside the cage and his willingness to share his story of overcoming childhood trauma. At #12 in the UFC featherweight rankings with title aspirations, Costa represents a new breed of fighter who entertains through varied, explosive technique while advancing a meaningful personal mission.

Why fans love Costa

Costa is authentic, charismatic, and visibly joyful inside the cage - he walks out to children's music as a nod to his advocacy work and uses his visibility to inspire kids living with vitiligo. His fighting style is explosive and varied, mixing striking and grappling finishes. He openly shares his story of overcoming childhood isolation and bullying, and his determination to fight for a title while continuing to raise awareness makes him a sympathetic, compelling figure.
