Marco Polo Reyes is a Mexican lightweight striker who transitioned from carpentry to the UFC, building an early reputation as one of mixed martial arts' most explosive knockout artists. After a four-fight run through regional Mexican promotions, he earned his shot on The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America 2 in 2015 before making his UFC debut that same year with a lightning-quick one-punch knockout of Cesar Arzamendia. For the next 18 months, Reyes looked like a rising lightweight threat, stringing together wins over Jason Novelli and Matt Frevola with devastating striking and earning bonuses for his performances. His career-defining moment came in June 2016 when he battled Dong Hyun Ma at UFC 199, delivering a grueling, action-packed war that ended in a third-round knockout and netted both fighters Fight of the Night honors, with Reyes registering the second-highest knockdown rate in UFC lightweight history per minute.
Reyes' style is built on aggressive forward pressure and tremendous hand speed that allows him to uncork knockout power from unexpected angles. However, his limitations against disciplined, composed opponents began to surface in 2017, when he ran into James Vick and was stopped in the first round. A brief resurgence came in early 2018 with a spectacular knockout of Matt Frevola, but that win proved temporary. A suspension for ostarine from a contaminated supplement derailed his momentum, and by 2019 he was caught in a three-fight losing streak, dropping bouts to Damir Hadzovic, Drew Dober, and Kyle Nelson. The UFC released him in February 2020, ending his tenure in the organization. Reyes has since moved to LUX Fight League, where he has continued to compete, remaining a dangerous striker capable of explosive finishes but no longer part of the sport's elite landscape.
Why fans love Reyes
His striking is explosive and efficient; he has produced several viral-worthy one-punch knockouts and Fight of the Night wars, and he carries himself without manufactured drama.
Why some fans hate Reyes
He tested positive for ostarine in March 2018 from a contaminated supplement and received a six-month USADA suspension, raising questions about supplement oversight. Additionally, his UFC run ended in a three-fight losing streak, frustrating fans who believed his early promise warranted better matchmaking or consistency.
