Rinya Nakamura is a Japanese mixed martial artist and former elite wrestler whose rise through the UFC has been marked by explosive finishing power and a willingness to evolve. Born into MMA royalty - his father Kozo Nakamura was instrumental in Shooto's development - Nakamura became the 2017 U23 World Champion in freestyle wrestling at 61 kilograms before announcing his MMA ambitions in 2020. He made an immediate impact as a professional, stringing together six consecutive first-round finishes before entering the Road to UFC competition in 2022.

Nakamura's Road to UFC journey culminated in a first-round knockout of Toshiomi Kazama in the bantamweight tournament finals at UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs. Spivak in February 2023, a performance that earned him his first Performance of the Night bonus. He carried that momentum into his first three UFC fights, winning unanimous decisions over Fernie Garcia and Carlos Vera while showcasing his wrestling dominance. However, he encountered his first professional setback in January 2025 when Muin Gafurov edged him in a three-round unanimous decision at UFC 311. The loss prompted significant reflection and change: Nakamura relocated from Japan to train at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, seeking to refine his striking at one of combat sports' elite facilities.

The investment paid immediate dividends. In August 2025 at UFC on ESPN 71, Nakamura returned to form in devastating fashion, finishing Nathan Fletcher with a vicious body kick and follow-up strikes just 62 seconds into their bout. Post-fight, Nakamura revealed he had actually underutilized his primary weapon - wrestling - and had instead focused on developing his stand-up game, catching Fletcher with a perfectly-timed body kick when the opening presented itself. At 30 years old and sitting at 10-1 overall with a 4-1 UFC record, Nakamura represents a potent blend of world-class grappling credentials, emerging striking prowess, and genuine competitive hunger, all underpinned by a humble, reflective approach to fighting and self-improvement.

Why fans love Nakamura

Nakamura's humble, introspective nature and genuine hunger to become a champion resonate with fans. His wrestling credentials are elite, his striking is improving rapidly, and he's willing to relocate and invest in his craft at top gyms. Post-fight interviews reveal a thoughtful competitor who learns from losses and works to improve.
